Cristiano Ronaldo in Real vs Mallorca game

In the debut of coach Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid could not manage better than a goalless away draw on its first game of the Spanish league against Mallorca.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Higuain had several opportunities to score, but an extremely effective and tight Mallorca defense inspired by a great performance from Israeli goalkeeper Dudu Aouate, kept the “Merengues” in check.

Real Madrid, thus found themselves off to a bad start while their main rival Barcelona started off with a convincing 3-0 away win on the grounds of Racing Santander with goals from the inevitable Messi, Iniesta and new sign-up stricker David Villa,

Real Madrid will play the next round against Osasuna at the Bernabeu on Septemer 12.   Continue reading Cristiano Ronaldo and Mourinho start new season with a draw

Cristiano Ronaldo frustrated against Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo frustrated against Spain

It’s the question everyone is asking not only in Portugal but throughout the world by football fans, now that CR7 and his teammates were sent packing after their defeat at the hands of Iberian rivals Spain in the round of 16 match on Tuesday in Cape Town.

With so much hype surrounding this dream Iberian derby, which featured FIFA’s second- and third-ranked sides in the world, Portugal ended their adventure without any bang as Carlos Queiroz and his squad were clearly beaten by a superior Spanish squad.

Spain won the game 1-0 with a goal by the inevitable David Villa at 63 minutes, which after some careful observation is clearly off-side, though not by much. Towards the end of the game, Portugal’s right back Ricardo Costa was unjustly red carded for apparently elbowing a Spanish defender.

Cristiano Ronaldo the Portugal captain and the world’s highest-paid footballer had probably his worst game ever. He appeared slow and tardier than most of his colleagues, failing miserably to get through Spain’s defense or even warm up his game on a chilly Cape winter’s night.

World Cup 2010: Cristiano Ronaldo in game against Brazil

Portugal secured a presence to the second round of World Cup 2010, after an intense encounter that ended in a 0-0 tie with Brazil in Group G, but without great scoring opportunities.

The game held in Durban’s spectacular Moses Mabhida Stadium, was expected to be relatively low key, but had in the first half the intensity of a decisive match, with many fouls, some of them hard, ending the first 45 minutes with seven yellow cards, even despite the fact that Brazil was already qualified and Portugal was coming into the match with a huge advantage in goal difference over Ivory Coast, which practically guaranteed its spot in the round of 16 even with a loss.

Portugal and Ivory Coast draw in Group G

Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal vs Ivory Coast game in Group G

Portugal and Ivory Coast played to a 0-0 draw in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup Group G, with the prudent Portuguese “Selecção” revealing many difficulties against a strong Ivory Coast squad and falling short of the fans expectations.

Brazil’s two main rivals in Group G, showed more fear of losing than ambition and determination to win, especially in the first half.

As one of the most anticipated games, fans were disappointed, since both teams had the potential for much more and better. Portugal was expected to be patient when in attack, but the truth is that they had more work in defense, finding a lot of trouble in creating imbalances in the front.

Vuvuzela could be banned from the World Cup

Vuvuzelas in South Africa World Cup

Vuvuzelas in 2010 South Africa World Cup

It was last year during the Confederations Cup held in South Africa that the world heard the constant drone of cheap and tuneless plastic horns called vuvuzelas, highly criticized by most coaches and players who considered them irritating and sounded like a swarm of angry bees or a herd of noisy charging elephants which completely drown out the national anthems being played and the chants of fans.

At the time FIFA was apparently not happy about these infernal horns, but the South African Football Federation pressured them into accepting the vuvuzela as being part of the football culture of South Africa.

Two days from the start of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Cristiano Ronaldo the Portugal and Real Madrid football star was added to other famous wax figures of Madame Tussauds in London and Berlin.

A wax replica of the Portuguese football player wearing his national team’s new gear, as he strikes his distinctive pre-free kick pose, is now on display alongside the England international footballers David Beckham and Steven Gerrard.

It took four months and cost 150,000 pounds (181,000 euros) to make the wax figure, needing more than 300 measurements when the Real Madrid winger attended a sitting with the Museum’s sculptors at the Real Madrid training ground back in December, as well as using dozens of photographs to work with.
